For the first time at Dancer's Dream
Studio!
"The Dancer and the Udist Workshop"
Sat., Aug 2, 2008
3:30pm - 5:30pm
In collaboration, Mrs. Jamal and Mr. Mekki
will demonstrate and instruct the students in the technique of improvisation
by the musician, and the interpretation by the Dancer. The student will
learn to dance to the 'Ud (the Arabic lute), as a solo instrument in a
performance, by identifying the tonal and rhythmic components. Mr. Mekki
will cover the basic understanding of the Arabic "Maqam" phenomenon, a
technique of improvisation unique to the music to Arabic music. The Maqam is
at the root of all genres of improvised vocal and instrumental music of the
Arabs. Mrs. Jamal will lead the students in the interpretation, through
movement and choreography, of such improvised music.
Workshop fee is $45.00 pre-registered by
July 31, 2008, or $55.00 at the door, space permitting. We encourage you to
pre-register, as our workshop of June 7th (The Dancer and The Drummer) was
sold out two days prior to the event. Those who pre-register will be
eligible to enter the raffle to win a free "Dancer and the Drummer"
workshop, scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2008, and other raffle prizes.

The Dancer
and the 'Udist ~ An Oriental Dance Workshop
presented by Jihan Jamal in collaboration with accompanist, Moroccan
musician, music ethnologist and composer, Mostafa El Mekki. These two
international artists bring you the opportunity to learn and understand the
musical structure of the Maqam, in theory and in movement.
Workshop Syllabus:
In collaboration, Mrs. Jamal and Mr. Mekki will demonstrate and instruct the
student in The technique of improvisation by the musician, and the
interpretation by the Dancer). The student will learn to Dance to
the 'Ud (the Arabic lute), as a solo instrument in a performance, (most
commonly interpreted by dancer and musician, in "Taqasim", in the West) by
identifying the tonal and rhythmic components of the Maqam.
Mr. Mekki will cover the basic understanding of the Arabic "Maqam"
phenomenon, a technique of improvisation unique to the music to Arabic
music. The Maqam is at the root of all
genres of improvised vocal and instrumental music of the Arabs. Mrs. Jamal
will lead the students in the interpretation, through movement and
choreography, of such improvised music.
What is a Maqam ? A maqam may be compared to the western concept of
a music scale, but has an implicit path (sayr) of melodic
development.
The class
will culminate with a choreography for the classical piece, "Lessa Fakker",
composed by Egyptian master, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, and made famous by the
Voice of the East, the incomparable Oum Kalthoum. (Listen to a rendition

This month's Asana (pose) for Bellydancers: Eagle

Garuda = the mythic "king of the birds," the vehicle of Vishnu. The word
is usually rendered into English as "eagle."
